Eternal Ring - PlayStation 2

"Eternal Ring," released in 2000 as one of the early titles for the PlayStation 2, has garnered an intriguing mix of opinions from players. Developed by From Software, the creators of the King's Field series, the game presents an RPG experience that focuses more on gameplay mechanics than on graphical polish. Critics agree that while the visuals are an improvement over the PS1, they can't compete with later PS2 titles, leading to some calls for an adjustment of brightness settings due to its inherently dark environments. From a gameplay perspective, "Eternal Ring" adopts a first-person view and real-time combat mechanics, distinguishing itself from typical Console RPGs. Players appreciate the unique spellcasting system, which uses rings that can be created or discovered, and note the challenge posed by the game's design—especially the controversial water mechanic that leads to instant character death in even shallow water. While the narrative is linear with limited side quests, some hidden elements, such as a secret dungeon and rare weapons, provide additional replay value. The game’s soundtrack has been universally praised, with its emotional orchestral scores enhancing the atmosphere of the game. However, players can also encounter occasional bugs, such as collision detection issues during spellcasting, which, while not game-breaking, can detract from the overall experience. Despite the praises, not all feedback is positive. Some players voice their frustration with the game’s clunky controls, subpar graphics, and what they perceive as a lack of polish and coherence in gameplay that might evoke nostalgia for old-school RPGs but fails to meet the expectations of modern gamers. Complaints regarding confusing mechanics, particularly in terms of combat, and the overall learning curve highlight a divide in player reception. Overall, “Eternal Ring” stands as a divisive title that may resonate with dedicated RPG fans looking for something different, although it may leave others feeling underwhelmed by its faults. **
