The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital is a versatile DAC that can be used as a preamp or headphone amp. It fully decodes MQA audio and can play various file formats including FLAC. The digital display shows the type of MQA being played and the unit also has several digital filter choices. The remote control is easy to use and the unit has a small footprint. However, the manual is skimpy and some users have experienced issues with the power connector. The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital is a Swiss Army knife of a DAC/Amp that brings a richness of detail and impact that is immediately noticeable. It has better transparency, sound stage, imaging and volume control compared to the DragonFly DAC which costs around $300 less. The sound can be a little strident in a home audio setting but is very good for CD playback with a good transport. The unit is glitchy and requires an extended warranty. The sound is excellent and booms when using an external power source.
