The angle of the guides is per side, not inclusive, so the 15-degree guide will put an overall 30-degree angle on the edge, and the included 20-degree will give you a 40-degree edge. The 17-degree guide is best for sharpening factory edges of modern steel pocket knives without reprofiling. The kit does not come with all the seven different abrasive grits listed in the first line of the description, but with a 400 grit, an 800 grit, and ceramic. The sharpener can sharpen a Tops Knives Earth Skills, but for a hatchet, it is recommended to use a coarser stone rather than this unit, unless going for a super sharp edge that won't hold up with typical hatchet use.
